Source Safflower is the flower of Carthamus tinctonus L., (Fam. Compositae.)

Producing Areas Mainly found in Henan, Jiangsu, Sichuan, Zhejiang

ACTION

  • Invigorates blood, eliminates blood stasis and regulates menses,as well as nourishes the blood
    For blood stasis, including gynaecological disorders, chest pain, abdominal masses and pain, as well as dermatological problems. It treats amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, postpartum pain, trauma and sports injuries, skin sores, carbuncles, measles, stillbirth and difficult labour.
  • Clears channels
    For joint pain or paralysis.

Usage and Dosage
Used in large quantity to remove blood stasis; used in small quantity to regulate blood flow to promote tissue regeneration.
3-9 g is used in decoction for oral use.

Note
Not used in cases where patients have a tendency to bleed easily. Contraindicated for pregnant women.


Storage
Keep in a cool dry place. Protect from light, moisture and moths.

Description of Quality Herb
A good safflower must be dried and have a long corolla. It should be red in colour and feels soft. Best if the flowers do not come with thorns or branches.
