Garden Burnet Root


Source Burnet Bloodwort Root is the dried root of Sanguisorba officinalis L, (Fam. Rosaceae)

Producing Areas Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shandong and Hebei, etc.

Properties Bitter, Sour, Astringent and Slightly cold

Channels Liver, Large Intestines

ACTION

  • Cools the blood and stops bleeding
    Treats bleeding due to blood-heat. Used mainly to cure hematemesis, hematuria, hemorrhoids, hemoptysis and metrorrhagia.
  • Clears away heat and toxic materials
    Treats diarrhoea and dysentery of dampness-heat type.
    Commonly used for typhoid fever. Topical application may be adopted for bumps, skin infection, eczema, skin abrasion.

Usage and Dosage
Used as crude herb for cooling blood and clearing of heat.
When prepared over a charcoal stove, it can stop bleeding.
10–15 g is used in decoction for oral use.
2–3 g of the powder is used orally.

Storage
Keep in a dry and well-ventilated place. Protect from mould.

Notes
Used with caution for cases with bleeding due to deficiency and cold, bleeding combined with blood stasis. Not for external use to treat large burns.
