Classification of Acupoints

(1) Meridian Points, or Jing Xue figure: regular points (361 in total) belonging to 14 meridians which have their names and definite locations individually. These are a major part of acupoints.
(2) Extra Points, or Jing Wai Qi Xue figure: those points NOT belonging to the meridian and collateral system (some of them are situated on the meridian, however); but they also have their names and definite locations. They are experiential points effective for certain diseases, and supplementary to the meridian points. Fifty extra points have been accepted by the World Health Organization for Nomenclature Standardization.
(3) Ashi Points figure: tender points or reflecting spots which do NOT have specific names and definite locations individually. They are often used for pain relief.
