Figwort Root

Source Figwort Root is the dried root of Scrophularia ningpoensis Hemsl. (Fam. Scrophulariaceae).

Producing Areas Zhejiang, Sichuan, Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Shaanxi, Shandong and Jilin, etc.

Properties Sweet, Bitter, Salty, Slightly Cold

Channels Lung, Stomach, Kidney

Action

  • Clears heat, cools the blood, and nourishes yin
    Use when heat has entered the blood level causing fever, bleeding, dry mouth, and a reddish purple tongue colour. Also for yin-deficiency heat, especially following a fever with dryness, constipation, irritability, and dry cough.
  • Relieves fire toxicity and inflammation
    For red or swollen eyes and severe sore throat.
  • Resolves nodules and lumps
    For neck lumps, swollen tonsils, scrofula, and swollen throat from phlegm fire.

Usage and Dosage
10 – 15g is decocted for oral use.

Notes Contraindicated for the patient with asthenic cold of the spleen and stomach, poor appetite and loose stools. It is incompatible with Lilu (Rhizoma et Radix Veratri).

Storage
Keep in a ventilated, cool and dry place. Protect from mould and moths.
