Source Tree Peony Root is the dried root of Paeonia suffruticosa Andr. (Family Ranunculaceae).

Producing Areas Anhui, Shandong, Sichuan, Hunan and Hubei, etc.

Properties Spicy, Bitter, Slightly Cold

Action

  • Clears heat and cools the blood
    For heat in the blood causing nosebleeds, vomiting with blood, bloody phlegm, subcutaneous bleeding and heavy menstruation.
  • Clears fire from yin deficiency
    For yin-deficiency symptoms, especially without sweating.
  • Invigorates the blood and removes stagnation
    For abdominal tumours, bruises, lumps, and amenorrhoea or dysmenorrhoea.
  • Calms liver fire
    For headache, rib pain, or eye pain.
  • Reduces swellings
    Used topically to drain pus and reduce firm sores. Used internally for intestinal abscesses.

Usage and Dosage
6 – 12g is decocted for oral use.
The carbonised is for stopping bleeding.
The stir-baked with wine is for circulating the blood to remove blood stasis.
The crude is for clearing away heat and cooling the blood.

Notes Contraindicated in pregnant women and those with asthenic cold of the spleen and stomach or menorrhagia.

Storage
Keep in a cool, dry place. Protect from mould and changing of colour.

Description of Quality Herb
The good one is long and thick in size with thick bark, without wooden centre, and with white and powdery broken surface, many crystals and strong fragrance.
