Chinese Clematis Root


Source Chinese Clematis Root is the dried root and rhizome of Clematis chujensis Osbeck and the other species of the same genus, Fam. Ranunculaceae.

ACTION

  • Dispels wind-dampness, opens channels, relieves pain
    For migratory Bi syndrome. It is best for muscle pain, spasms, cramps, numbness and stiffness in the extremities. The powdered form is mixed with wine for use. Alternatively, the powder may be combined with incised notopterygium rhizome and root (qianghuo), doubleteeth pubescent angelica root (duhuo), twotoothed achyranthes root (niuxi) or largeleaf gentian root (qinjiao) etc.
  • Dislodges fish bones
    For fish bones stuck in the throat (not if large or deeply lodged). Add sugar and vinegar to the decoction and swallow slowly.
  • Stimulates menstrual discharge to stop pain, dysmenorrhea and amenorrhea
  • For acute tonsillitis and pharyngitis or sore throat
  • For jaundice caused by acute infectious hepatitis

Usage and Dosage
The crude is for treating phlegm and fluid in the chest, jaundice of damp-heat type, fishbone stuck in the throat. The stir-baked with wine is for expelling wind and dampness in Bi syndrome, stimulating menstrual discharge to stop pain, dysmenorrhea and amenorrhea. 6–9 g is used in decoction for oral use.
The decoction can be used externally for washing. The pounded fresh can be used for external application.

Note
Patient suffering diarrhoea. It is toxic, hence avoid taking an overdose.

Description of Quality Herb
The good one has long and stout root, black or brownish black colour, without remains of the aerial parts.
